BENGALURU — A senior cabinet minister resigned citing "humiliation" on Tuesday after discovering that the Chief Minister’s solemn promise to grant him the Bengaluru Development portfolio was effectively meaningless without the approval of the party's central high command.
The minister, who was instead handed the Major and Medium Irrigation department, reportedly learned that local leadership pledges serve primarily as conversational flair. "The Chief Minister did assure him the city development role, but we must remember that state-level promises are merely polite suggestions to the central leadership," a party spokesperson explained, adding that the high command must assert control to prevent state ministers from believing they have autonomy.
The resignation exposes the immediate internal instability of the newly formed government. The crisis deepened when another senior leader, who had been eyeing the Social Welfare portfolio, began publicly "sulking" after being handed Food and Civil Supplies. Bureau records indicate this follows a strict post-election tradition wherein portfolio allocations lead directly to public dissent, necessitating central intervention to remind local leaders who is actually in charge.
"Our newly elected Chief Minister is completely empowered to announce the decisions that have already been finalized by headquarters," the spokesperson added, gesturing to a stack of newly printed, largely decorative cabinet assignments ahead of the Greater Bangalore Authority elections.
